What little plot there is follows the House of Dragon, a secretive sect with secret powers and a secret treasure. There are moments when the show’s production elements come together so spectacularly that they almost lift the rest of the show with them. The visual bombast and fight choreography of Dragon Spring, a world premiere Shed commission, are thrilling enough to recommend the show as an expensive diversion, at the very least. The heroes and villains possessed no distinguishing character traits, other than differing accents, and they voiced no discernible reasons to be fighting. At the showing of Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise at The Shed that I attended, audiences clapped and hooted for heroes and villains alike, despite being given no logical reason to do so. by the HANCOCK agency and Paul Byram & Associates.Sometimes you don’t need a long, complex story - or even an engaging one - to hook an audience. In 2022 Jasmine received a DYCP grant from Arts Council England to develop her practice to engage London’s local East and Southeast Asian elderly community through unique creative and movement experiences, and to continue refining her collaborative practice for devising with artists across various disciplines. Jasmine is a 2021 Choreodrome Artist at The Place and has been funded by Arts Council England National Lottery. Her first R&D WILLOW was commissioned and presented by Dancin’ Oxford and Pegasus Theatre in 2021, and has since developed into a full-length solo work AT BROKEN BRIDGE which ran its sold-out performances at Camden People’s Theatre in 2022.

Jasmine is also an interdisciplinary maker making solo performances. She played Gemma Zhao in Jurassic World 3: Dominion (Universal Pictures), Wild Girl in Wild a children’s play adapted from Emily Hughes’ storybook (Unicorn Theatre), and Violet in Out of The Deep Blue alongside a 13-foot giant puppet (Autin Dance Theatre). Nowadays Jasmine is expanding her performance vocabulary by working more with theatre practitioners, film and TV, and puppetry. The kung fu musical was co-conceived by Chen Shi-Zheng and Kung Fu Panda’s Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger featuring songs by Sia, and choreography by Akram Khan. Jasmine continues to work internationally and was brought back to New York City in 2019 to play the leading role of Little Phoenix in Dragon Spring Phoenix Rise produced by The Shed. She’s featured in Biffy Clyro’s music video Space, and toured Europe with multimedia artist Ulf Langheinrich in Vortex. Notably she has worked with Wayne McGregor, Akram Khan, English National Ballet, and devised performances for Anthea Hamilton’s Tate Britain Commission The Squash, and Primetime at Southbank Centre. Jasmine then moved to London UK and began cultivating extensive relationships with makers of dance, theatre, music, and the visual arts.

She’s taken part in professional advancement at Jacob’s Pillow, Springboard Danse Montréal, and Nederlands Dans Theater.įollowing graduation Jasmine began freelancing in New York City where she worked with the Elisa Monte Dance company, Brice Mousset/OUI Danse on stage and on film, performed with the Chase Brock Experience, Francesca Harper Project at The Joyce Theatre, and Broadway Asia. She then went to The Boston Conservatory, graduating summa cum laude in 2014 with a BFA Contemporary Dance. Jasmine began her training at The Richmond Academy of Dance where she studied ballet and modern dance forms extensively, alongside acting and singing coaching from Vancouver locals. Now based in London UK, she was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Richmond, B.C., Canada. Jasmine Chiu 趙明 (she/her) is a dance artist, actor, maker, and engaged practitioner.
